Massage Therapy is a form of body manipulation in which practitioners manipulate muscle and connective tissue to enhance the function of those tissues, and to promote relaxation and wellbeing.
As massage is one of the oldest forms of healing, current scientific research is revealing that it is in increasing need in today’s society.
Massage is a complementary medicine, it is therefore able to be used safely in conjunction with other therapies, such as Physiotherapy.
Increase the circulation of blood and other body fluids, enabling tissue growth and repair in the post injury phase of rehabilitation.
Release tension and trigger points (knots) that are found in muscle, which can be caused by stress.
Enhances your joint range of motion. Injuries to different body joints cause a reduction in the available range of motion because of immobilisation of the limb.
Alleviate pain and stiffness associated with muscular tension.
Relax your mind and body.
Promote lymphatic drainage.
The principles that guide how massage therapy is applied are derived from the principles of natural medicine. These are:
To maintain optimum health and wellbeing, the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of an individual need to be balanced. If an imbalance occurs in any one of these areas, an illness is more prone to occur.
The field of natural therapies uses methods that are as close as possible to their natural state. This is then less likely to produce harmful side effects.
Massage Therapists philosophy is to prevent illness from eventuating where possible. This can be achieved by using a combination of treatments and client involvement in health promotion.
Your practitioner must educate you to take responsibility for your health and wellbeing. By teaching, motivating and supporting, the client and practitioner relationship is empowered.
This philosophy begins with the understanding that your life’s experiences are written in your body. The ensuing patterns induce alterations to both form and function can result in restriction, pain, mal-alignment, impaired energy levels and physiology.
Our professional approach to Remedial Massage Therapy will help identify client’s specific needs and tailor their massage therapy to meet each client’s restorative and preventative health needs.
Physiotherapy is complemented by massage, as the two modalities share many common aims. Massage can take place after the initial assessment has been undertaken by your Physiotherapist. Massage prior to further Physiotherapy sessions can help by releasing tension to make joint manipulative therapy and exercise sessions more comfortable and effective. Circulation is also stimulated which facilitates the delivery of vital nutrients and the removal of broken down waste products from the tissues. Massage can also assist to break down recent scar tissue where an injury or operation has occurred.
A trigger point is defined as a hyperirritable spot in skeletal muscle that is associated with a hypersensitive, palpable nodule in a taut band. The spot is painful on compression and can give rise to characteristic referred pain, referred tenderness and autonomic phenomena. Also known as a Myofascial Trigger Point. The types of Trigger points include Active, Latent, Central Attachment, Sattelite and Key Myofascial Trigger Points.
Massage Therapists use a range of techniques to alleviate Trigger Points. These include Neuromuscular Techniques, Positional Release Techniques, Muscle Energy Techniques and Myofascial Release Techniques. Speak to your Massage Therapist to find out more about Trigger Points and their treatment.
